Historic Preservation Partnership
Organized a partnership with the Cumberland County Planning Office, Franklin County Planning Office, Shippensburg University History Department and the Center for Land Use & Sustainability (CLUS), Cumberland County Historical Society (CCHS), and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Applied for a mini-grant from South Mountain Partnership. The partners officially received the grant at the South Mountain “Power of the Partnership” meeting on September 29, 2023.
The project will involve the planning and organizing of four workshops ( two in the Spring and two in the Fall) in 2024. The workshop audience will consist of County residents, planning departments/commissions from the 33 municipalities, HARBS, and Historic Preservation Commission members.
A Historic Preservation Citizen Guide will be developed by the Shippensburg University History Department and will be accessible on the Cumberland County website.
Workshops will consist of Cumberland County history, historic preservation law as it applies to Pennsylvania, the importance of maintaining a “sense of place” through historic preservation, and the role that natural and cultural resources play in historic preservation.
William Thompson House
Documenting and photographing the restoration of the historic William Thompson house located in North Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, PA. Thompson is officially recognized as the first colonial of the United States Army. He earned the title in 1775 during the Revolutionary War.
The house was built in 1764.
Barnitz Mill
Assisting Friends of Barnitz Mill in developing plans to save and find a use for the Mill. It is located in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County, PA.
